Hello, my name is Kellen Tichenor and I am 32 years old. I am an owner manager of MGA Maryland and Florida, as well as one of our head girls competitive gymnastics team coaches.
I have been heavily involved in the sport of gymnastics since I was 7 years old, having been coached by my dad, Brian Shrewsbury, for over 18 years. Soon after starting gymnastics, I became involved competitively and progressed all the way through the Elite level. Over the years, I traveled all over the country for competitions, qualifying for Junior Olympic Nationals several times, as well as the National Qualifier at the Olympic Training Grounds in Colorado. Three days before the competition in Colorado, I broke my hand and was unable to compete. Later on, a bad vault landing caused me to tear my ACL and put me out for 9 months.
Although I did come back to competition later that year at the age of 23, when I did finally come back my priorities had changed. During my time off I had become more heavily involved in managing the gym and coaching, which I fell in love with. I competed for a couple of years after, retiring from competitive gymnastics at 25.
Over the years, I learned how important not only the physical and mental benefits of gymnastics are, but also the experience of the journey along the way. I try apply this to my coaching philosophy by setting high expectations for my students, while also showing them genuine caring. I loved the experience that I had growing up in the gym, and my goal is to create an environment where my students can have that same experience, while achieving their highest potential. I love my students like family, and do my best to set a good example for them.
