MGA is a fantastic family gymnastics center in Central Maryland in Central Florida. Gymnastics, cheerleading, tumbling and Ninja classes are available for children of all ages, as well as gymnastics and fitness for adults.
Our students begin with an evaluation of their skill level and then are placed in classes to help them develop their abilities. Students taught by experienced instructors and coaches to provide a nurturing caring environment for all students of all ages. Our floor managers monitor classes to make sure that each and every customers experience is the very best it can be.
We began our business over 50 years ago in Washington DC @ 1964. We are a third generation business that has been serving the DC Metro area and Virginia for many years. Our center outside of Washington DC, was founded by Carolyn and Jerry Shrewsbury. The center began as just a small tumbling program and grew into a 15,000 Square foot gymnastics center with gymnastics, tumbling and dance. About 20 years later we moved south into a larger facility in Upper Marlboro, MD where one of our facilities still remains today.
Carolyn and Jerry Shrewsbury trained many national level gymnasts and sent many students to school on gymnastics scholarships over the years. Carolyn and Jerry retired from the sport in 1990 and took jobs in counseling and administration within the school system. Their son Brian Shrewsbury began running the gym in DC during that time and re- incorporated the business as Maryland State Gymnastics Center Inc.
In 1999 Brian Married Barb Taylor and became an instant dad to her 4 minor children. Later the couple adopted three more children to have a brood of 7 children. In the years that followed Barb and Brian raised their seven children, homeschooling them and training them in gymnastics. The family traveled extensively and the children competed all over the country. They became accomplished gymnasts over the years wining awards as they grew up, one even competing nationally and qualifying to the USA Championships competition in Colorado Springs.
Later when the children grew up they began working at the center and going to college gradually transitioning from competing to coaching and managing the business operations day to day. Today 5 of the children are grown and two of the younger children continue to compete and work at the center. Kellen Tichenor and Abby Tichenor have become partners at MGA Florida. Our center has continued to grow and thrive the past 5 years here in Florida and in DC.
In 2010 Brian and Barbs family along with their new partners, Kellen and Abby Tichenor (son and daughter) began modernizing their business and bringing technology and new ideas to proved better customer service and a better leaning environment for kids and families. In 2011 the family decided to follow their dream of and expanded their business into the central Florida area while continuing to serve the community in the DC Metro Area. Our family began making frequent trips to Orlando in search of the perfect community to open our new business. We needed a supportive growing community with families that wanted gymnastics, cheerleading and tumbling programs.
We all did a lot of driving over the next six month, researching and talking to a variety of people from numerous communities. During the summer of 2012 we met Mike Cooper and his family at the Cooper Commerce business park in Apopka and we decided to settle in Apopka, Florida. With the help of many friends, parents and faith we launched our perfect little gym on a small site in the Cooper Industrial Complex. Our little gym opened in the fall of 2012 as only a 6,000 square foot facility dedicated to lower level gymnastics and recreational classes for boys and girls.
Today, our facility in Florida has grown to a beautiful 20,000 square foot Olympic level facility dedicated to competitive gymnastics, cheerleading, tumbling and Ninja. We have in ground pit systems, tumbling tracks and a variety of equipment for advanced level training. Our other facility is 6,000 square foot smaller gym dedicated to our recreational classes, preschool gymnastics and Ninja (parkour) classes.
Our Maryland location continues to evolve to include exciting new programs like our Ninja Squad, as well as fun equipment and curriculum for our recreational classes. We are very proud of our facilities in both Maryland and Florida, and we hope to grow over the next 10 years into 8 smaller gym facilities in the Orlando area, and train upper level gymnasts (boys and girls) as well as All-star Cheer and Tumbling and Trampoline teams as well. The next 20 years look to be quite busy and exciting.
